Does Climate Impact Make a Difference?

Each month our broadband and SIM reduce a customer's carbon footprint by 10kg (each) which is equivalent to 12 train trips from London to Manchester. This is achieved by emission-preventative projects, managed by our climate impact partner Ecologi.

So far, customers have collectively prevented over 5,000 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere, this is equivalent to 12.4 million miles driven in a car. Customers have also planted over 190,000 trees for future decarbonisation in forests all over the world.

A Resolution that Will See You Saving

Did you know that you can cut your food waste, carbon footprint and save money by simply changing how you make your meals?

Cooking at home using separate ingredients instead of pre-made meals can significantly reduce your food waste, plastic waste, and food emissions. Here's a breakdown of the key factors:

Food Waste:

  • Reduced portion control: Pre-made meals often come in fixed portions, leading to potential overconsumption and food waste. When cooking at home, you can prepare meals to your exact needs, minimise leftovers, or intentionally batch cook for other meals, maximising your ingredients and money.
  • Increased ingredient flexibility: Using separate ingredients allows for greater flexibility in meal planning. Leftover ingredients can be used creatively in future meals, reducing waste.
  • Better understanding of food: Cooking from scratch encourages a deeper understanding of food, its origins, and its shelf life. This knowledge can help reduce food waste by planning meals effectively and storing food properly.
  • Healthier diet: Even if your home cooking isn't meant for slimming, it will likely contain far fewer chemicals that can be harmful to our health. Meaning that you're also creating healthier meals that may be helpful in the long run.

Plastic Waste:

  • Reduced packaging: Pre-made meals often come in single-use plastic packaging, contributing to plastic waste. By cooking at home with separate ingredients, you can significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastic waste generated as fresh food can be hand-picked into stored in reusable bags or recyclable bags.
  • Reusable containers: When storing leftovers or meal prepping, reusable containers can be used instead of single-use plastic bags or containers.

Sustainability and Food Emissions:

  • Lower carbon footprint: Cooking at home often results in a lower carbon footprint compared to purchasing pre-made meals. This is because the production, transportation and refrigeration of pre-made meals contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Less production time equals better: Typically, food with fewer miles between its source and your table is less processed. This means less energy and emissions are required to produce it, making it more sustainable.
  • Reduced food miles: By sourcing ingredients locally, you can further reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.
  • Healthier eating: Cooking at home often leads to healthier eating habits, as you have more control over the ingredients used and the cooking methods employed. This can contribute to a more sustainable diet with a lower environmental impact.
Cooking at home does require more time and effort than simply heating up food in the oven or microwave. However, the benefits in terms of reduced waste, improved health, and environmental impact can certainly outweigh the initial investment.

Research has also shown that children who grow up in homes with regular home-cooked family meals, typically have a healthier diet, have lower rates of obesity and are less likely to develop mental health issues.
