Can I Get Fibre Broadband?

Fibre broadband is the UK's most popular choice of home internet connection, with over 98% of homes having access to FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) broadband in 2025.

This means that most people are already using fibre broadband up to their local internet cabinet on the street, and the connection going into their home or building is non-fibre. However, not every home can upgrade to FTTC and especially FTTP (Fibre to the Premise), which runs fibre cables into your home.

FTTP can future proof your home broadband for decades, as there will be no need to upgrade again. You'll be on the most future-proof internet connection there is!

Find out if your home is ready for fibre broadband with our guide.

Do I Need Fibre Broadband for the Big Switch-Off?

Yes, you will likely need a form of fibre broadband to maintain your internet service once the Big Switch-Off is completed in January 2027. A Fibre connection in either form (FTTC or FTTP) is the most popular choice for UK homes in preparation for the Big Switch-Off.

Any legacy broadband (ADSL/copper-fed broadband) and connected legacy technologies, such as landline phones, must be replaced with VoIP phones that utilise more advanced digital technology. It's important to check if your devices and any around your premises are compatible with fibre, or you may risk being disconnected.

Fibre broadband services are connected via fibre-optic cables, which have been under a UK-wide installation project since 2017, when BT formally announced the Big Switch Off. If in the last 8 years you may have had your nearby pavements worked on with a thin line of new concrete laid over the top, there's a high chance that fibre-optic cables were being installed.

How do I know if I already have Fibre Broadband?

It can be confusing to know exactly what type of broadband you have without checking. Here's a breakdown of how you can check if you already have fibre broadband:

1. Check Your Broadband Contract/Bill:

  • This is often the simplest and quickest way to find out. Your broadband provider will specify the type of broadband you're contracted to (e.g., "Fibre," "Full Fibre," "FTTC," "FTTP"). Look for terms like:
  • "Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC)": This means fibre optic cables run to your local street cabinet, and then copper wires connect to your home.
  • "Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)" or "Full Fibre": This means fibre optic cables run directly to your home.
  • Also, look at the speeds listed on your bill; higher speeds generally mean that you have some form of fibre broadband. Typically, FTTC is 35Mbps and above, and FTTP is usually 75Mbps and above.

2. Use Online Postcode Checkers:

  • Use your postcode on the Openreach Fibre Checker: This is a reliable resource to see what types of connection your home can have, including the availability of FTTC and FTTP.

3. Check Your Router and Wiring:

  • If you have FTTP, you'll likely have a small box on your wall where the fibre optic cable enters your home.
  • If you have ADSL/copper broadband or FTTC, you will likely have a phone socket entry point for your broadband, which will look familiar as it's the connection that has been in most homes for decades.

4. Contact Your Broadband Provider:

  • If you're still unsure, you can contact your broadband provider directly. They can tell you exactly what type of connection you have and help you with any other broadband queries you may have.
