3G Switch Off UK in 2024: Your Co-op Mobile Guide

The UK mobile network landscape is undergoing a significant change with 3G service ending!

Much like the UK's broadband infrastructure, a retirement process is underway to create space for newer technology, 5G. All mobile network operators are phasing out their 3G networks throughout 2024 and 2025. This means that if you're currently using a phone that only connects to 3G networks, you'll soon need to upgrade to a 4G or 5G compatible device to continue making calls, sending texts, and using mobile data.

When Is 3G Being Switched Off?

The exact cut-off date for all UK mobile network providers isn't until 2033, though all leading providers are ensuring this switch-off is carried out by December 2025.

Your Co-op Mobile has switched 3G off

Your Co-op Mobile’s 3G switch off took place in February 2024 so we now only offer 4G and 5G connectivity

In the lead up to our 3G switch off, Your Co-op customers were notified via email that mobile phones that can only connect to 3G networks or are not compatible with 4G and 5G, will no longer be able to make calls, send texts, or use mobile data. If your mobile phone itself cannot support 4G or 5G but your SIM can connect to 4G and 5G, this will not matter as the device cannot support these newer types of network data.

How to Check If Your Phone Is Affected

Not sure if your phone is 4G compatible? Here are a few ways to find out:
  • Check your phone manual: Most phone manuals will clearly state whether the device supports 4G connectivity.
  • Visit the manufacturer's website: Look for your specific phone model on the manufacturer's website and check the technical specifications section for information on network compatibility.
  • Use a model checker tool: Many websites offer free tools that allow you to enter your phone model and see if it supports 4G.
  • Check your phone settings: This will vary slightly between devices, however, you should be able to find the connectivity normally displayed.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Tap on Cellular or Mobile Data (depending on your iOS version).
  • Tap on Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options.
  • Look for an option related to Voice & Data. You might see options like "5G Auto," "5G On," or similar. This is the highest level of connectivity available on your device so you will also be compatible with 4G.

  • Open the settings app on your Android smartphone.
  • Select the preferred network type option.
  • Once you reach there, all the specifications and networks supported by your phone will be listed. If 5G is listed among them, then your phone supports 5G.
