Give Earth an Hour: 5 Simple Ways to Help the Planet
Published date: March 2024
Our planet sustains us, providing everything from the air we breathe to the food we grow. So, shouldn't we take some time to show our appreciation on Saturday 23 March 2024?
While Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our planet, every day presents a chance to show our love and care. This year, why not participate in "Give Earth an Hour"? This initiative encourages individuals to dedicate 60 minutes to activities that benefit the environment and people too.
Here are 5 quick and impactful ways you can participate in "Give Earth an Hour" and make a difference, all within 60 minutes:
Tips for Earth Hour 2024
1. Become a water warrior:
- (15 minutes): Check your taps and toilets for leaks. Even a small drip can waste gallons of water over time. Fix any leaks you find or report them to the appropriate person if you're renting.
- (15 minutes): Take a shorter shower or a more water-efficient bath. You can also try installing a low-flow showerhead to reduce water usage further.
- (30 minutes): Hand-wash dishes instead of using the dishwasher, especially for smaller loads. If you use the dishwasher, ensure it's fully loaded before running it.
These steps won't only reduce your carbon footprint but also save you money on your water and energy bills.
2. Embrace sustainable shopping:
- (45 minutes): Plan your shopping list for the next week or two and stick to it to avoid impulse purchases that often lead to food waste. Try to be selective about where you eat out and consider sustainability and food-sourcing credentials.
- (10 minutes): Choose products with minimal packaging, especially those made from recycled materials. Opt for loose fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged options whenever possible.
- (5 minutes): Bring reusable shopping bags to avoid using bags provided at the store.
3. Get planting for a greener future:
- (30 minutes): Start an indoor herb garden! Herbs are relatively easy to grow and add a fresh touch to your meals. Plus, you won't be contributing to the environmental impacts of transporting goods to the shops and your home.
- (30 minutes): If you have outdoor space, plant native flowers or trees. These species attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, promoting biodiversity in your local ecosystem.
4. Become a conscious communicator:
- (30 minutes): Research and educate yourself on environmental issues. Stay informed about local initiatives and organisations working towards sustainability. There may even be local groups that you weren't previously aware of.
- (15 minutes): Spread awareness by sharing eco-friendly tips and information with your family and friends. You can share interesting facts and tips about sustainability on social media and encourage others to participate in "Give Earth an Hour".
- (15 minutes): Contact your local representatives or environmental organisations to voice your concerns and advocate for policies that promote environmental protection.
