Staying connected while abroad should be super simple and easy, whether you're on a business trip or a long-awaited holiday. But with roaming charges, it can be easy to rack up a hefty bill on your return. Here at Your Co-op Mobile, we want to make sure you stay connected without breaking the bank, which is why we don't charge you for using data in the EU.

This blog will guide you through roaming and international calls with Your Co-op Mobile.

Free EU Roaming

Good news! If you're travelling within the European Union's European Economic Area (EEA), you can use your phone just like you would at home. This means you can make calls, send texts, and use your data allowance without any additional charges or actions to activate with Your Co-op Mobile.

What Countries are included in Free EU Roaming?

All mobile providers offering free EU roaming must include all countries listed in the European Economic Area (EEA). You can use EU data roaming in these European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

To sum up, you would pay the same price for using these services when travelling in the EU as you would if you were at home. Any call placed within the EU must be treated as if it was made domestically.

Calling from the UK: International Roaming Charges

Outside the EU, data roaming can be expensive, from the 1 November 2017 roaming outside the EU has been subject to 20% VAT. Most handsets have a setting that will allow you to disable roaming and data roaming, so you can choose whether or not to make and receive calls or use data while abroad. That’s why we have made it free to use EU data roaming with all of our SIM bundles, so you aren’t met with any surprise bills when you travel.

If you're calling from the UK to a number outside of the EU, international roaming charges do apply. These charges vary depending on the country you're calling. To avoid any surprises, we recommend checking our international call rates (Section 3) before you go ahead with any international calls. Though with apps like Whatsapp you can make and receive calls using data or Wi-Fi, without using any call minutes.

It's also important to remember that International Calls from mobiles in the UK are not covered by the unlimited minutes and texts in their SIM package. You can check the cost of making international calls from the UK with our international call rates guide (Section 3).

Things to Do Before You Go Abroad

  • Check your plan: Make sure your data plan includes enough data to keep you connected while on the go abroad.
  • Remember to turn on roaming: Some smartphones may have data roaming disabled so make sure this is enabled to use your data while abroad.
  • Turn off data roaming (optional): If you're not planning on using data abroad, you can turn off data roaming in your phone settings. This will prevent any potential breaching of caps.
